Kind f like when alt rock became 'pop' in a sense, just relating to sales and popularity. But US jazz sounds far to Euro for me. If I want that I will move back there. It's the most American musical art form in that sense. And sometimes the best art is the most offensive. Honestly, I don't really "like" to listen to Wayne Shorter's solos. Compare him to Dexter Gordon, for instance. One is insistent, harsh, and weird, the other is pleasant, smooth, and logical. But I listen to Wayne all the time anyway, because of the totality of his genius. vagranauthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08134576384623768193noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6602840668013735641.post-49298385422211164962013-06-10T21:43:12.050-05:002013-06-10T21:43:12.050-05:00Well said. When he started writing his classic signature pieces that also gave him even more lee-way. The Weather Report years are sadly where I started to not dig him as much, I would have liked to seen Brecker or Mintzer in that group---but the music is wonderful, just not my taste.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00970524560952390509noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6602840668013735641.post-77110672021756603802013-04-08T07:21:18.583-05:002013-04-08T07:21:18.583-05:00To be honest, in having discussed this with you be...To be honest, in having discussed this with you before, I find that a LOT of "Modern" Jazz leaves me cold. Sure, it is chop-heavy, well thought out and a technical marvel but, in the end, the Music just doesn't seem to do much for me. I find, so many times, that when I hear stuff like this, I scramble for my recordings of the masters of the past, almost in an attempt to make sense of it all.

So many times, someone will ask me how I feel about a certain player or singer, as the case may be, and I, invariably, wind up saying that I would "rather listen to Hank Mobley or Anita O'Day and get it from the source"!

There are some wonderful players out there. I just question the Music, in totality. Being an innovator is over-rated, in my own opinion. I hear too many players that have command of their instruments, yet seem to have no history of the Music to form a basis for what they do.

Jazz CAN entertain and enlighten, but I hear too much from some players that seems to alienate the listener. For what it is worth, I think that the Music CAN reach people if you let it. It doesn't mean you are selling out. I have always found it good to try to present things to the public that they can, somewhat, relate to, instead of playing ugly, disjointed Music for the sake of trying to be "hip".

For me, I try to find a bridge between the old and the new, so as to entertain AND educate the listener. Too much of the new stuff, to me, is a showcase for technique, odd meters, vague chord changes and difficulty, yet lacking in any real substance.

Brent VaughanBrent Vaughanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09271587522774516276noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6602840668013735641.post-26319886904455829872013-04-06T22:59:54.245-05:002013-04-06T22:59:54.245-05:00Nice analysis.
